New Orleans Public Schools

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Many of our team members grew up either in New Orleans or nearby suburbs, so we have a special place in our heart for the crescent city. We were honored to have the opportunity to build the New Orleans Public School (NOPS) system website after Hurricane Katrina.

The website at www.nops.k12.la.us has a lot of functionality “under the hood” with our custom Ruby on Rails Content Management System (CMS). The CMS allows NOPS personnel to efficiently update all portions of the website using a “what you see is what you get” editor.

If you know how to use Microsoft Word, you can use our CMS! We also built a user module that allows a NOPS administrator the ability to manage user permissions of personnel so that the department heads only have the opportunity to update the pages of the site that apply to their department. Louisiana Children’s Education Alliance

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

We really enjoyed working on this project as it gave us the opportunity to put together the complete branding of the organization.  The Louisiana Children’s Education Alliance is a non-profit designed to educate parents, community leaders, and policy makers about how providing educational options to parents can empower them to chose the best education for their children, and have a positive impact on citizens and businesses in the community.

We used to walk to class, up hill, in the snow...We used to walk to class, up hill, in the snow...

We started with the logo design as well as many printed materials, and of course we finished things up with a website that will knock your socks off.  Check it out here:  www.lcealliance.org

Louisiana Dept of Corrections

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The Louisiana Department of Corrections (DOC) is responsible for the custody and care of adult offenders across Louisiana. Just over half of Louisiana‘s approximately 37,000 inmates are assigned to the state’s thirteen correctional facilities. The remaining offenders are assigned to parish facilities and work release centers. DOC’s Probation and Parole division supervises an additional 63,000 offenders.

Link-fest!Link-fest!

The DOC website contains a vast amount of content, so we had to pay close attention to usability.  We decided to use an “accordian style” navigational system on the left side that displays top-level categories that slides out sub-categories on click. This way we could organize many pages in a relatively manageable amount of space on the left side of the design. We also included a search box at the top that quickly delivers content to the user.

And of course we enhanced the overall look and feel of the website by using several images across the top in a flash movie along with some minor “web 2.0″ adjustments to the logo (seal) that make a huge difference. Feel free to check it out here:  www.doc.louisiana.gov
